Students will complete the Pearson BTEC International Level 2 Certificate in Creative Media with a focus on the construction of various multimedia products such as advertising (print, video and online), video (film, television, online, DVD) and podcasts; this will be delivered through the Creative Arts faculty. How will I be assessed? The course is 100% coursework with no examinations. Students will be assessed on four units of coursework, feedback will be provided and an opportunity to improve before final submission is provided.
Unit 1: Research, Develop and Propose Ideas ideas for a Digital Media Product
This is a mandatory unit in which students will learn about various research methods used within the Creative Media industries in order to conduct research into products and audiences. Students will then apply this knowledge and understanding to develop and propose an idea for a digital media product from either the film, advertising or podcasting sector. This could prepare students for a career in any of the various creative Media sectors in roles such as Market Research Data Analyst, Advertising Account Planner, and Editorial Assistant.
Unit 4: Digital Video Production
Digital video production covers a wide range of film and video making from movies, TV adverts, news, music videos, promotional videos to tutorials and viral videos on the web but each shares common factors which is the use of camerawork and features which communicate effectively to the target audience. In this unit students will explore the features of video products for different purposes and platforms. Students will use their findings to inform the pre-production, production, post-production and digital publication of a video product for a specific purpose. This could prepare students for a career in the Television, Film or Digital Video sectors. Careers in these fields can be both creative and technical Director, Producer, Cinematographer, Sound Design and Post-Production.
Unit 5: Audio Podcast Production
Audio podcasting is flourishing because podcasts are a powerful way to tell stories and connect with people. They are an opt-in medium, you can choose when you listen to and when to listen, which means they build a very close relationship with their listeners. In this unit students will investigate audio podcast formats and features and the relationship between different podcasts and their listeners. Students will refine their skills in podcasting by developing their own ideas for a podcast and learn how to plan, record and edit an episode of that podcast. This could prepare students for a career in the Radio and Podcasting sector. Careers in this sector include both creative and technical professions such as Audio Editor, Producer, Content Writer, and Commissioning Editor.
Unit 10: Advertising Production
Advertising and the media are inseparable. Advertising exists in some shape or form in every medium, including television, film, radio, the press and the internet. The advertising industry has diversified and adapted to keep pace with the changing digital landscape which consumers engage with and the methods and techniques used are both subtle and explicit. In this unit, students will learn how different techniques are used in advertising to persuade and engage the consumer. Students will develop ideas for an advertising campaign and then plan and produce this across different mediums. This could prepare students for a career in the Advertising and Marketing sector. Careers in this sector encompass many creative and technical professions such as Marketing Coordinator, Market Researcher, Copywriter, Account Executive and Creative Director.
What will I be using? With the advancements in technology you can create outstanding video productions on your phone! However you will have access to the full Media production facilities at WIS to help you out, including lights, gimbals, drones and DSLR cameras. You will support your practical work by developing your skills with Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Lightroom and Photoshop.
Is this course for me? If you’ve enjoyed Media Studies in Year 9 or saw your friends in Media making short film sequences and wanted to try it for yourself then this is the course for you. You will be using industry standard facilities and work in a collaborative and engaging environment where you can develop a wide range of skills and develop not only as a potential future film student but a well-rounded and creative learner. Post 16 Pathways The course provides the perfect pathway to IB Film. Media Production can lead to careers in filmmaking and production, communication studies, journalism, marketing, PR and many more. The well-rounded nature of the course and the wide range of skills development offer a virtually limitless selection in terms of future careers.
