Students will follow the Cambridge International Education IGCSE: Design and Technology 0445 If you enjoy solving real problems and designing and creating products in materials such as wood, plastic and metal then this is the course for you. You will build on the experience and skills you have developed in Years 7, 8 and 9 in Product Design and Engineering. Over the two-year course you will develop your designing and making skills as well as gaining an understanding of the technology behind the subject. You will learn about the methods used by industry to manufacture the products we use every day and gain an insight into issues related to design and technology that affect us all. Both computer-aided-design (CAD) and computer-aided-manufacture (CAM) will be practised.
How will I be assessed? Paper 1: Product Design, 1 hour 15 minutes, contributes up-to 25% of the final marks and assesses design thinking. Paper 3: Resistant Materials, 1 hour, contributes up-to 25% of the final marks and assesses knowledge and understanding of materials, process and commercial manufacture. "Component 2: Project, This is an extended personal design assignment consisting of a 3-dimensional product and a concise design folder."
Is this the course for me? Students should have a personal passion and interest of how products we use on a daily basis are designed and made. You will develop skills in problem identification and problem solving, traditional and modern design including advanced computer aided design, traditional and modern manufacturing including computer aided techniques including laser cutting, 3D printing and plasma cutting.
Post 16 Pathways If you wish to consider a career in Architecture, Computer Aided Design, Product Design, Environmental Design, Furniture Design, Industrial Design or Mechanical or Structural Engineering then this course would be an excellent choice for you! This course is a good foundation for your studies towards IB Design Technology or Advanced Diploma in Engineering.
